Operation Dry Water
It’s the unfortunate reality that boating under the influence (BUI) is socially acceptable to many boaters. According to the Coast Guard, boating under the influence is the leading contributing factor in boating fatalities, and more than 17% of boating fatalities are a direct result of drug or alcohol use. Beginning today and running until Sunday, Operation Dry Water is aimed at changing this acceptance. Held each year on the weekend prior to the 4th of July, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) coordinates the event in conjunction with each state and the U.S. Coast Guard. Local law enforcement agencies are asked to increase BUI enforcement by stepping up patrols and/or creating checkpoints to identify potentially impaired boaters. This year NASBLA reported more than 5,000 officers from more than 150 agencies in all 50 states are participating, an increase over last year.
